Chennai was formerly known as Madras and has had links to Europe for centuries. It was occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French before finally settling in the hands of the British in the 18th century. Today, Chennai is known as the Detroit of India because of its impressive automobile industry.
Begin your sightseeing tour of Chennai with a visit to the 13km-long Marina Beach, the second-longest beach in the world. Continue to Fort St George, which was built by the British to protect their position. It is now the state government’s secretariat and there is also a museum as well as St Mary’s, the oldest Anglican church in India.
Even more beautiful is the glistening, white Santhome Catholic Cathedral, which was built in the Gothic revival style by the British on the site of a Portuguese-era church. See also the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, the oldest in Chennai, and Parthasarthy Temple. The Snake Park has a large collection of snakes and many other reptiles while in the evening, there’s the option of visiting the flower and fruit market.
