One of the most endearing aspects of Albufeira is its array of styles, the result of a devastating earthquake during the 18th century. Consequently, a large amount of local landmarks now display a fusion of architectural styles combined with several centuries- lookout for old Moorish sights dotted around the old town.

Admire the uniquely Portuguese Manueline-style St Sebastian’s Church, the 18th century St Anne’s Church and the restored Gothic-style Mercy Chapel. The belfry of the parish church is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks and is not to be missed. The tower is topped with an eight-bell carillon and the stairwell stands at an impressive 28 metres high. Visit The Tower of Medronheira which was built in the 1500s and was used to watch the horizon for pirates and invaders, or hop off and admire the impressive statue of St Vincent which commemorates the famous missionary’s eventual martyrdom in Japan.

Join us on a journey of discovery of the inland Algarve, specifically the area known as ''Barrocal.” This tour will delight your senses, awaken your curiosity and whet your appetite for more.

Our first port of call is the small town of São Brás de Alportel, quite typical of the Algarve in its architecture and activities. Here we explore a local bakery renowned for its traditional produce such as carob bread, almond cakes and honey cakes and the local carob liquor, which you can also sample.

Then we visit a cork factory. The cork that is harvested in the surrounding area is brought to this factory, prepared, treated and then exported. There is also time to visit the fascinating São Brás Ethnographic Museum.

Moving on, we go to Salir, a bucolic village where you can see the remnants of the ancient castle and its imposing walls. Our final destination is a large estate where biological agriculture is practiced. Here you can learn the secrets of their famous preserves and also sample some of the delicious produce. An excellent opportunity to sample the delights of this charming region.
