- Immerse yourself in a vibrant urban community oozing in history and culture
Maboneng, a Sotho word meaning “Place of Light”, is a fully fledged thriving community that has become a centre of creative energy for Johannesburg’s urban artists. Located on the eastern side of the city's business district, Maboneng offers retail stores, entertainment venues and restaurants combined with residential, office and industrial spaces appealing to many types of people and businesses. With a mix of art galleries, retail and studio space, the precinct draws the inner-city public as well as a chic, art-going crowd.
Enjoy a leisurely walking tour of the area and a visit to the Carlton Centre, browsing around the arts and craft shops and sampling artisan food and produce.
Some places in Johannesburg were for years seen as no-go zones because of urban decay and crime, so these areas were transformed and regenerated – and the Maboneng precinct to the east of Joburg city is one of them. Now, life has been brought back into this Gauteng neighbourhood in downtown Johannesburg. This is a secure, urban neighbourhood where residents, businesses and visitors form a growing number of people making up the heart and essence of the city of Johannesburg. It was art that started out Maboneng, and since then, the area has become a collaborative hub of culture, business and lifestyle that encourages curiosity and exploration and creates a sense of urban togetherness.
Maboneng is the epicentre of the Joburg inner-city renaissance, and is a place where you can find a creative edge to history, architecture, art and nature.
