Overview
If you are in Barcelona, and want to know more about the history of the city, you can't miss this walking tour of the old part of the city. You will learn how it was founded, its evolution over the years and the history of its most illustrious characters. We will start at Pelayo Street, one of the main commercial streets of the city. This street, which runs from the Plaza de la Universidad to the Plaza de Cataluña, serves as a division between the oldest and newest parts of the city. We will continue our tour on foot through one of the biggest squares in Spain and one of the most important places in Barcelona, Plaza de Catalunya which has an area of 30,000 square meters. From here, we will go down one of the most beautiful and famous streets of the city, the Ramblas, we will go down its 1. 2 km of length through flower and souvenir stands to arrive by the sea, to the old port of the city. We will know the history of the old city of Barcelona, the guide will tell us how the Emperor Augustus founded it and the name he gave it. We will see the remains of its wall as we walk through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and arrive at Nova Square or Cathedral Square. Here, in the centre of the Gothic Quarter, is the Cathedral. It was built on the foundations of the early Paleochristian basilica and the later Romanesque cathedral and is in the Gothic style. We will have the opportunity to meet important figures in the history of the city such as St. Roque or Wilfredo the Hairy and to learn more about the flag of Catalonia and how its current design came about. We will walk around the Plaza del Rei and Plaza del Pi until we reach the Plaza de Sant Jaume, the current administrative and political centre of the city. Here we find the town hall, and the Palau de la Generalitat. In Roman times, two great communication routes of the city crossed here: the Cardo and the Decumanus. Don't miss this tour full of interesting facts about the formation of the city and its development to this day
