Retiro Park - Walking Tour

The Buen Retiro Park is a large and popular park at the edge of the city center, very close to the Puerta de Alcalá and not far from the Prado Museum. A magnificent park, filled with beautiful sculptures and monuments, galleries, a peaceful lake, and a host to a variety of events, it is one of Madrid's premier attractions. The park is entirely surrounded by the present-day city.

Since assuming its role as a public park the late 19th century, the "Parque del Retiro" has been used as a venue for various international exhibitions. Several emblematic buildings have remained as testimony to such events, including the Mining building, popularly known as the Velázquez Palace (1884) by architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, who also designed the Palacio de Cristal ("Crystal Palace"), a glass pavilion inspired by The Crystal Palace in London.

Parque del Retiro Guided Tour

"This beautiful tourist attraction in the city is a historical garden and public park. Inside, we can contemplate its collection of architecture, sculptures, and landscapes from between the 17th and 21st centuries.

Of these monuments, we will give special attention to the one dedicated to Alfonso XII, the Crystal Palace, the Great Pond, the Parterre, the Gate of Philip IV, the Royal Astronomical Observatory and the Fountain of the Artichoke. We will also be sure to see the chapel of San Pelayo and San Isidoro.

Our guide will tell you about how in 1767 Charles III agreed for this area to be used for recreational events and it began to be used as a city park. In 1868 the park was taken over by the Madrid city council. Much of the original layout was destroyed during the French invasion, however there are still traces of the 17th and 18th century throughout the park.

The park is 118 hectares and a has a perimeter of 4.5 km, bordered to the north by Calles Alcalá and O’Donnell, to the south by Calle del Poeta Estaban Villegas, to the west by Calle Alfonso XII, and to the east by the Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo. Naturanda will help you discover one of the most emblematic city parks in Spain.
