Doomed, Dead and Buried - Small Group Walking Tour

Explore the haunted streets with experience no other tour company can offer, then head to the Canongate graveyard, where the spirits of the dead await.

It might be something to do with the change in temperature. Or the perpetual darkness. Or the ever-smaller closes, stretching beyond the weak beam of a torch. Whatever the reason, there is something unsettling about Edinburgh's shadowy closes – and your expert guide will reveal the troubling tales on this evening walking tour.

Hear the grimmest of tales, cannibals, body snatchers. Deals with the Devil.

And that is before we head underground.

A walk along dim streets to the Canongate graveyard will bring you to the resting place of the city’s most famous figures: Adam Smith, the father of economics; David Rizzio, confidant of Mary Queen of Scots; and James Douglas, 3rd Marquess of Queensberry – the infamous cannibal of the Canongate.

Evening of Ghosts and Ghouls - Small Group Walking Tour

The night begins with a walking tour of the darker closes and wynds of Edinburgh, before journeying into the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults. Finally, we will retire to a candlelit cellar for a dram of Scottish whisky and an evening of storytelling.

The air filled with cries and taunts, and a crowd of thousands baying for the blood of two men.

Take your place as a member of the ‘Edinburgh mob’, which once surged in riot past the Mercat Cross.

Hear grisly tales of witchcraft, torture and restless spirits as you venture down medieval closes and descend into the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults. Your cloaked guide will lead you through the dimly lit caverns, filling the night with stories – all of them true.

As night thickens, we will gather in Megget’s cellar for a whisky – or a glass of lager or soft drink if you’re not fond of a dram.

In the warmth of candlelight, your storyteller will conjure more tales of Edinburgh’s ghoulish past, and the tortured souls that stalk the city’s streets.

Ghostly Underground - Small Group Walking Tour

A daytime walking tour of Edinburgh’s most haunted sites - we have been uncovering them for over 35 years and know the very best. This tour is perfect for a peek into the city’s ghostly past because things do not only go bump in the night.

The true history of the Edinburgh is terrifying enough – so abandon thoughts of manufactured frights and make-believe. The skill is in the storytelling: the city witnessed the deeds of mischief-makers and murderers, vagrants, and torturers. It is one of Europe's most haunted cities, where restless spirits still tread.

You will follow your cloaked guide through the shadowy closes of Edinburgh’s Old Town. These are dark streets untouched by daylight, filled with a strange silence, their damp walls carrying only the faintest echo of the crowds on the high street you have left behind.

With the scene set, you will descend into the quiter depths of the city – and listen in horror to its dark and sinister side. Torture. Murder. Hangings. From body snatchers to real-life characters of the city, you will be gripped by the true tales that lie hidden beneath Edinburgh’s grand exterior.

Watch out for a cold breath on the back of the neck, a whisper, a flicker – then silence. It is even more chilling for being absolutely real: there are no tricks or jump scares on our ghost tours.

Edinburgh is famous the world over for its New Year’s Eve celebrations but at the Hard Rock Cafe Edinburgh, every day is a party. Feast on the delicious American fare with the best burgers in town and admire the spellbinding rock memorabilia collection. The many items include a sombrero worn by Elvis Presley in his movie, Fun in Acapulco, a guitar signed by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and a boarding pass in Jimi Hendrix’s name for a London to New York flight.

Like all great revolutions, the Hard Rock Cafe wasn’t meant to succeed. It was 1971 and as the Swinging Sixties had given way to the Super Seventies, fashions and tastes were changing. Two hungry young Americans were in London and couldn’t find a decent place to eat a decent burger… so they opened up a joint in the English capital. Their landlord didn’t think it would last and only gave them a six-month lease. Four decades later, there are almost 200 Hard Rock Cafes in more than 50 countries worldwide.

The first T-shirt hit the streets in ‘74 and the first piece of memorabilia came, fittingly, by chance in ‘79 when Eric Clapton asked to hang his Lead II Fender guitar over his favourite bar stool and thus marked it as his spot. Today, the rock 'n' roll collection has more than 74,000 pieces and is the largest of its kind. By 1982, the Hard Rock Cafe had gone global and the rest, as they say, is history (that’s still being written).

Old Town Walking Tour and Whisky Tasting - Small Group

Walking the Old Town of Edinburgh you'll see the city that founded the world’s largest Scottish whisky company, hear of the people that helped whisky production and then retire to Megget’s cellar for a candlelit single malt whisky tasting from four whisky producing regions.

King James IV has been referred to as the world’s first famous whisky drinker and it was to Edinburgh, he granted a monopoly of the manufacture of aqua vitae or whisky. He believed in the medicinal properties of whisky which was produced by the Guild of Surgeon Barbers; it is just one of the transformations of whisky over the centuries.

Upon meeting your expert tour guide you will hear about Edinburgh’s role in taking whisky to the rest of the world. Learn about how the 19th century changed whisky production in Scotland and of the locals that embraced whisky, from George Ballantine on South Bridge to Andrew Usher Jr at Nicolson Street, the pioneers that created their own whiskies and exported worldwide.

The tour continues with a whisky tasting in our candlelit Megget’s Cellar. There is no better way to warm the spirits. You will taste four Scottish whiskies, under the guidance of our whisky specialist.

Our expert will cover everything you need to know about the water of life; from how whisky is made to the effects that different elements such as water, barley, peat and the cask have on the production process. Nose and taste your way through the whisky regions, with sample whiskies from Speyside, Highland, Islay, and Lowland distilleries.

Just consider this your first step to becoming a whisky connoisseur!
