Half Day Athens City Tour

There is nothing more remarkable than a sunrise. Especially in Athens. It is in the morning, when the Greek god Helios drives his Sun Chariot into the sky, it is the part of day which most enhances the beauty of Greece’s landmarks and it is when you take a tour through the city’s incredible history, where you can appreciate today with thanks to its rich architectural legacy.

Begin your discovery with a visit to the old plateau of the Acropolis, where the ancient remains of the outstanding Parthenon can be seen standing alongside other manifold symbols of the graceful classical Greek era. Yet Athens’ claim to fame doesn’t lie solely in the past; it often overlaps with the present. You will get to know the colossal Panathenaic, the stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896, built upon the skeleton of an ancient Greek stadium. You will also visit the Greek Parliament in the renowned Syntagma Square and Athens’ vary own Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, solemn and haunting in its silence.

You wont be disappointed at the Arch of Hadrian or other interesting sites such as the lush Zappeion gardens, the magnificent Royal Palace and, of course, the famous Academy, named after the Academy founded in the distant past by the philosopher Plato.

Sounion tour

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of busy Athens with a short ride to the southern coastal town of Sounion. At only 60 kilometres from the south of Athens, this picturesque little town gives you a true taste of Aegean beauty. Feast your eyes on the palate of colours the sea turns into as the sun sets behind it.

Make your way there from the Greek capital in the early afternoon and enjoy the panoramic view along the way. At this hour, the coastal road-trip offers a wondrous view of the sea, as colours start dimming and the wind starts chilling after the midday heat is gone. Along the way, contemplate the little fishing towns that dot the coast whizzing by your window.

Reach Sounion and enjoy a deep intake of fresh salty air. The view of the town and the calm, provincial background noises will have the psychic effect of that breath of fresh air, having left hard-core civilization behind you. Once there, visit the regal Temple of Poseidon. This spectacular construction hangs on the edge of a cliff, from where the ancient Greek god of the seas could contemplate his magnificent azure realm: the Aegean. The sunset from this vantage point is truly a sight to never forget.

Spend some leisurely time in the village before returning to Athens. In Sounion, myth and magic blend together in the quaint environment of a fishing town. Relax and feel yourself soar through the waters of history.

Blue Star Ferry ticket from Piraeus Port to Hydra

Do not lose the opportunity to visit Hydra on your own, you can have the tickets just for one way or the option of two ways returning the same day, enjoying the day on that wonderful and special island.
Hydra is part of the Saronic Islands, you can arrive just in 2h from Piraeus Port in Athens by ferry.
The main aspect from this island is that there are no cars or motor vehicles, aside from ambulances and garbage trucks. The main method of transportation are the delightful donkeys and mules, also the water taxis.
Some reasons to visit Hydra:

1. THE ISLAND’S ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY
The “Grand Lady” of the Argosaronic Gulf, Hydra has been amphitheatrically developed around its port. The island’s houses, cube-shaped with tiled roofs, sit together in a tightly knit formation, as depicted in the work of Hydra artist Nikos Hatzykyriakos-Gikas. They stand proudly to reflect the island’s maritime history. A mansion housing the Merchant Marine Academy stands among them to the right side of the town when looking out to sea.
The academy at this building – originally belonging to Lazaros Tsamados and Maria Sahini, associated with the island’s prominent shipping tradition – has operated since 1739. Hydra’s considerable number of ship owners established this private-sector educational institution to train crews and skippers. It was the first Merchant Marine Academy to be established in the world. Located at the same side of the town, the Hydra Historical Archive-Museum maintains a rich permanent collection.
“The endless partying on Hydra during the 60s, which generated worldwide fame for the island, may be long gone, but it still maintains a cosmopolitan aura.”
The city of Hydra was built amphitheatrically around its port and has maintained this layout through the ages.

2. ISLAND’S LOVE FOR THE ARTS
Hydra acquires particular interest for art enthusiasts during the summer months. Over the years, the island has stood as a major draw for artists. It continues to attract artists of various artistic fields, giving the island a contemporary artistic identity. The old slaughterhouse – which has recently been restored and renovated – is now a project space dedicated to the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art. Another notable place is the now-customary Old School Project, organized by Dimitris Antonitsis and located at the old Hydra High School. Do not skip visiting the Hydra Workshop, a fabulous little gallery near the Fine Arts building.

3. DISCREETLY COSMOPOLITAN
The endless partying on Hydra during the 60s, which generated worldwide fame for the island, may be long gone, but it still maintains a cosmopolitan aura. The nightlife on the island is nowadays mild. Interesting private parties are hosted at houses and on yachts. Hydra remains romantic and attached to its history. Visitors may take a ride on one of the local mules and feel like foreign tourists in old black-and-white Greek films.
Hydra remains romantic and attached to its history. Apart from the beautiful views, Hydra is known for its many festivals and celebrations.

4. THE WALKING ROUTES
The only way to truly get to know Hydra is by exploring its cobbled paths or trails beyond the village, high up, all the way to the Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias) monastery. More recently, an effort to highlight these routes is being made through the staging of the Hydra’s Trail mountain running event. Along the way, take a dip at Spilia and Ydroneta. Also board a little boat all the way to Bisti, the island’s southernmost cove, and Aghios Nikolaos beach, located southwest, for good swimming.

5. THE FESTIVALS
The Miaoulia festivities (held annually, June 23-26), honoring Greek War of Independence naval hero Andreas Miaoulis, feature reenactments and firework displays. Later in the summer, in August, the island celebrates its Kountouriotia event, a tribute to Hydra admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis, the first and third President of the Second Hellenic Republic, Greece’s political regime between 1924 and 1935. In October, the island hosts competitive sailing events.

Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio Tour

We explore the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the ancient Mycenae and Epidaurus and we give a modern touch to our day with a short stop at the coastal city of Nafplio. We visit Mycenae, the Golden Kingdom of Agamemnon and admire the most famous ancient theater of all times, Epidaurus.

Highlights
Take photos from the picturesque Isthmus of Corinth connecting the Corinthian with the Saronic Gulf
Explore the Kingdom of Agamemnon, the Cyclopean Walls and the archaeological park of Mycenae
Admire the Golden Mask of Agamemnon, the leader of the Trojan War
Visit the coastal city of Nafplio (short stop)
Walk around the ancient Epidaurus, known as the theater with the best acoustic worldwide

We depart to Mycenae with the bus together with our friendly trip attendant-archaeologist, at 08:30a.m from the “Smart-Eco-Pickup” at Halandri metro station. The distance is 130km and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. During the way we have a short stop for coffee and photos at the beautiful Isthmus of Corinth. We reach the ancient city of Mycenae where the Cyclopean Walls “take our breath”, as until today no explanation can be found regarding their construction. Mycenae is considered the greatest and richest kingdom of the later Bronze Age (around 1350B.C). Even the legendary author Homer was inspired by Mycenae to compose his epic poem “Iliad”. We have about 1.5 hours to admire the archaeological site of the argolic plain with the unique findings such as the great Lionesses Gate, the Ancient Treasure of Atreus also known as King’s Agamemnon Tomb and the Tomb of Clytemnestra.

Later on, we visit the museum of Mycenae where we can find the famous Golden Mask of Agamemnon and various artifacts from the life, the activities and the burial customs of Mycenae. Exhibits from the royal Grave Circle A΄ and B΄ are exposed as well as various burial complexes and other historical copies.

After Mycenae, we reach the beautiful seaside city of Nafplio where we enjoy our greek traditional lunch. Naflpio used to be the first capital of Greece (before Athens) and its architecture has venetian, byzantine, ottoman and modern greek influences. It connects perfectly the intense marks of the historical past with the modern life. The oldest district of the city is called Acronafplia, with various traditional spots where the locals hang out and above it we can see the Castle of Palamidi, which rules from the top of the hill. In front of city’s port, we can see the Castle of Bourtzi in a small island emerging from the argolic gulf.

After the connection of the ancient greek history in Mycenae with the cultural beauty in Nafplio, we head to the epicenter of the ancient drama; the ancient theater that until nowadays is considered the one with the best acoustic balance worldwide, the Ancient Epidaurus. In the antiquity, Epidaurus was connected with the healing center of Asclepeion and is considered that there was the origin of the medical science. The art of drama in Epidaurus was connected also with the healing of the human soul, the supreme beauty and moreover the salvation of one’s soul. Today in Epidaurus, modern artists organize newer versions of ancient tragedies as well as the Festival of Epidaurus takes place, known also as Epidavria. We have 1 hour to admire the ancient theater.

We depart to Athens at around 16:00 where we are back at about 17:30 at the Smart-Eco-Pickup, the Halandri metro Station.
