Half Day Township Cultural Tour

Embark on a unique and humbling experience as you journey through the three South Africa’s. Find out about its birth, and explore where it all began, unravel the stories behind Apartheid South Africa, where you will find out exactly what happened, before seeing the New South Africa, what is different since Nelson Mandela was released from prison.

Highlights
- Discover the roots of Cape Town as you travel back in time
- Hear about the harrowing stories of the Apartheid
- Learn just how this vibrant and bustling city became to be

Departing from Cape Town city centre, the first stop is in the Bo Kaap. Here you will find out about the arrival of an expedition of Dutch sailors in 1652 that proved to be a monumental turning point in South African history. As you take a short walk along the romantic cobblestone streets between the brightly coloured homes, your tour guide will explain how the framework for racial segregation was established.

Passing some of Cape Town’s landmarks, a short drive brings us to District 6 where we elaborate on the next tier in the South African story, the Apartheid South Africa. Once in District 6, drive through the now decaying ruins of what once was a flourishing mixed-race community where 60 000 people lived and worked, but was demolished only to be reserved exclusively for white people.

The tour continues to Langa, the oldest Black African Township in Cape Town. Along the way, we elaborate on the restrictive legislation introduced by the Apartheid regime to enforce racial segregation. On arrival in Langa, we have a photo stop at the site that commemorates the student uprising of 1976; discuss the Pass Laws and the barracks built for African migrant workers. If conducted on a Sunday morning, the tour includes a short visit to one of the local churches. Here guests are immersed in the charisma and vibrancy of how religion is practiced in the townships. While is Langa, we also share the miracle of our country when Nelson Mandela convinced us to forgive so that we can free ourselves. We also offer our groups a greater understanding of Shanty Town that exploded with the massive migration of mothers and children into the cities restoring black dignity at the end of Apartheid.

Walk To Freedom & Robben Island Full Day Tour

This tour offers a wealth of insight into South African history. It includes a brief educational introduction to Cape Town, one of the world’s most varied and popular cities.

The day commences with a look at the picturesque “Bo-Kaap” – an historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery and is a living cultural museum and home to the oldest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. We discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South Africa’s development.

Here we shall walk through the area and stop at the Bo-Kaap Museum which was established in 1978 as a satellite of the SA Cultural History Museum. It was furnished as a house that depicts the lifestyle of a nineteenth-century Muslim family and the local Islamic culture and heritage.

From here we head east into the central business district of the city precinct and stop at the Slave Lodge. Under the umbrella theme, ‘From human wrongs to human rights, exhibitions on the lower level of this museum explore the long history of slavery in South Africa. Through the changing, temporary exhibitions the museum address issues around and raise awareness of human rights.

During the latter part of the morning we examine the area of Zonnebloem, which was District Six and visit the living museum. The District Six Museum, established in December 1994, works with the memories of the District Six experience and with that of forced removals more generally. With the struggle for the land now taking a different form (of the more banal yet intricate logistics, legalities and bureaucratic mechanisms of RETURN which are no longer pitted against apartheid) the museum is now bound to support the process of 'reinventing' District Six for the present.

Around 12h30 your tour will arrive at the Nelson Mandela Gateway & Museum, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Check in for your ferry trip across the bay to Robben Island for a guided tour of the island as well as a tour of the prison by an ex in-mate.

Cape Town Peninsula Full Day Tour

Don't forget your camera! Relax as you enjoy the awe-inspiring drive, passing steep mountains, secluded coves and sweeping beaches, as well as villages and fishing communities as you head to Cape Point at the south-western tip of the Cape Peninsula, home to the most spectacular views in the world.

Highlights
- Admire breathtaking views of the majestic coastline
- Stroll around the stunning Cape Point Nature Reserve
- Discover some of Cape Town's most iconic locations

Start the morning with a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast, passing through the cosmopolitan suburb of Sea Point then Camps Bay with its glorious views of the Twelve Apostles, part of the Table Mountain range. Continue to the fishing village of Hout Bay, one of Cape Town's best-kept secrets. Here you will have an option to take a short boat trip to Duiker Island (not included & time permitting) to view the Cape Fur Seals, which inhabit the island.

Next, travel to the Cape Point Nature Reserve, comprising over 17 300 acres of indigenous fauna and flora. Here you will have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife that includes baboons, rhebok, Cape Mountain zebra, bontebok and the elusive eland. The reserve is also one of the world’s largest breeding grounds for tortoises. Bird-watchers, too, will find many fine species to observe.

The majestic coastline offers drama worthy of being called “Nature's Greatest Show”. Watch the union of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans (as per legend), and feel the brisk wind that is dubbed the “Cape Doctor” for its presumed curative powers. Following the coastline along False Bay, return to Cape Town via Simon’s Town, where you visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach (not included), Fish Hoek fishing village and Muizenberg. Before arriving back to Cape Town, enjoy a stop at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens for a short walking tour of the beautiful gardens before passing the University of Cape Town, Rhodes Memorial and the Groote Schuur Hospital.
