Ayutthaya Historical Park Tour – Full Day

If you thought Bangkok was only good for partying and departing to the islands, think again! The ancient capital of Thailand is located just 85km away, making it easy to explore on an Ayutthaya tour from Bangkok.

Dating back to 1350, the sites of Ayutthaya Historical Park are a must-visit for fans of history, architecture and religion. Thanks to your experienced tour guide, you’ll learn all about Buddhist history as we explore countless temples.

In the 18th century, much of Ayutthaya was destroyed by Burmese invaders, hence the structures are in various states of disrepair. Tree roots growing around scattered Buddha heads only adds to the historical charm of this unique destination.

We’ll depart from Bangkok bright and early, visiting Bang Pa-In Royal Palace en route to Ayutthaya. Used as a summer residence for ancient Thai kings, the golden pagodas and serene pools make a great introduction to the region’s glorious past.

After arriving in Ayutthaya, we’ll have several hours to explore fascinating ancient religious sites including Wat Mahathat where a decapitated Buddha head sits nestled between ancient tree roots.
We’ll also visit Wat Mongkol Borpit known for its enormous seated Buddha statue, then Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, the most holy and important complex of the ancient Thai capital

Finally, we’ll explore Wat Chaiwatthanaram, known for its towering stone chedis. This site is one of the main reasons Ayutthaya was awarded UNESCO status in 1991. After you’ve taken your fill of photos, we’ll transport you back to Bangkok after a fun and informative day out.

Lonely Planet Experiences - Bangkok Chinatown Food Discovery

Travel back through time at the old world markets of Yaowarat, in the heart of Bangkok's vibrant Chinatown, beginning at Ratchawong Pier. Learn about the original Chinese citizens who lived here as traders in the village of Bangkok, before it became the capital of the Kingdom of Siam.

Amble along Song Wat Road, bordered by historic business buildings and warehouses. Emerge onto Yaowa Phanit Road, an important plastic and leather production quarter, and onto the end of Chinatown to encounter the beautiful Wat Traimit Temple. This stunning work of architecture enshrines the world's largest golden, seated Buddha. Built during the Sukhothai Era it is almost five metres tall and weighs a hefty five and a half tonnes! The temple also houses the Chinese Museum displaying the fascinating history of the Chinese people in Thailand.

Treat yourself to a tasty snack in a 100-year-old coffee shop on Phat Sai Road, where you can drink-in both the delicious coffee and the relaxed, charming atmosphere. Thoroughly refreshed, we continue to Issarnuparb Road to a market specialising in Chinese religious products, fresh produce and seafood.

As dusk settles in, Yaowaraj Road transforms into a sea of street stalls, collectively becoming one large food bazaar with everything from street grills to five start restaurants. Take a seat next to your guide to sample charcoal-grilled seafood direct from a street vendor.

With your stomach full of Bangkok’s delights, round off your night at Talat Pak Khlong, the largest wholesale flower and vegetable market in Bangkok. It comes alive at night as the street is covered with a colourful flower display, making it a bright and cheerful end to your day. Here you’ll be able to take photos of the city before exploring the area or returning to the hotel under your own steam.

Pattaya Beach and Coral Island Tour from Bangkok - Full Day

Bustling Bangkok is a must for any Thailand trip, but so is getting out! If the metropolis is too much, let us take you on a memorable adventure to our favourite cultural spots outside the capital. Get ready for ancient temples and colourful local life as we journey to:

Maeklong Train Market: Firmly off the tourist train, this vibrant local market dates back over 100 years. While the fresh local produce, trinkets and souvenirs are worth browsing, the real attraction is the steam train that thunders through several times a day, sending market vendors scattering.

Wat Bang Kung: Hidden inside the roots of an ancient Banyan tree, this charming temple has Angkor Wat vibes for sure. Once you make your way through the knotted roots to the shrine enclosed inside, you’ll find statues dedicated to the long-gone soldiers and generals who protected Thailand from the Burmese in the 1800s.

Let us introduce you to Koh Larn, a dreamy drop in the ocean (er, Gulf of Thailand) known for its white sands and clear waters. We’re taking you on a day trip from Bangkok – all you need to do is sit back and watch as the scenery changes from concrete jungle to island paradise.

After arriving at Pattaya Pier, we’ll have four hours to relax in paradise. Whether you choose to swim, snorkel, try your hand at beach sports, or simply relax on white sands, there’s plenty to keep you busy… or not busy if that’s what your heart desires!

After returning to Pattaya, we’ll explore the surrounding area before returning to Bangkok. At Pattaya Viewpoint, we’ll soak up panoramic views before paying a quick visit to the massive Sanctuary of Truth temple. Although still under construction, it’s a striking work of architecture with incredibly detailed woodworking where you can catch your last glimpse of the sea before we head back to the big smoke.

To really get to know Bangkok culture and daily life in Thailand, you need to bag yourself this ultimate tuk tuk experience, the Bangkok day tour with a twist! You’ll dig right into this Bangkok tuk tuk tour by riding one from the very start. Your local guide will ride along with you and you’ll whizz through the busy streets of Bangkok, stopping at the marvellous Phra Sumeru Fortress, where you’ll learn a bit about the history behind this area. Next stop on the tuk tuk ride is the Amulet Market, where locals sell all kinds of traditional Thai amulets, charms and medicines. Your local guide will explain everything you need to know about these quirky bits and bobs and what part they play in Thai culture.

The knick-knacks and spooky bits and bobs have all kinds of different meanings in Thailand, from good luck to warding off evil. Fret not because you’ll get the lowdown thanks to your guide so you need not walk around looking completely baffled. Time for another tuk tuk ride and this time you’ll pop along to Wat Saket which is a terrific temple that lies at the foot of the Golden Mount. You will climb your way up the 318 steps (unfortunately your tuk tuk can’t lend a hand this time around). You’ll hop back in to your tuk tuk and head down to Phahurat Market which finds itself in the heart of Bangkok's Little India, where you’ll come across all kinds of fabrics, cloths, ornaments and accessories. As well as the arts and crafts stuff, there will be a range of tasty Indian treats sold in stalls along the way. This place has managed to get the perfect mix of Thai and Indian culture bang on the money – it has to be seen to be believed! Moving on, head to Pak Klong Talad or the flower market. The flower market is the biggest and best in Thailand and is open 24-7. Every kind of flower imaginable can be found here and the market acts as a distribution centre, shipping flowers all over the rest of the country.

Wasting no time it’s on to Wat Po, the temple that houses the most beautiful reclining Buddha image of the country which was also the birthplace of Thai massage and medicine. Round things up by doing a tour of the area, listen up as you hear some local tales along the way. If you want to call it a day, the guide can point you in the direction of your accommodation from the temple. On the other hand, you can carry on and go it alone – it’s up to you!

The Ancient City

See the architectural and cultural highlights of Thailand in one afternoon at the Ancient City.

The vision of Thai businessman Lek Viriyaphant, the Ancient City features scale models of some of Thailand's outstanding architectural gems from its earliest times through to the current era. Here and there a genuine period building has been reassembled amongst the reproductions.

Everything has been assembled on a layout that resembles the outline of the map of current day Thailand, with the exhibits placed in the location as they would appear on the map. At a ratio of 1:3, the models are quite grand, and some are complete reproductions ofbuildings that either no longer exist or lie in a ruined state.

Examples cover all periods of history and their distinct styles, and all the regions. Here and there small examples of traditional domestic architecture are found such as a scaled down market town - where the arts and crafts and regional foods can be seen being prepared and for purchase. For the visitor short on time, Ancient City provides an introduction to Thailand within an afternoon.
