In Focus: The Olive Tree of Istanbul

Tucked away on a tiny side street, in an area not far from the tourist centre of Istanbul, you’ll find a small building called The Olive Tree. Like its namesake, it’s a modest but strong place, much like the people it supports. It represents a peaceful co-existence of cultures.

Syria’s civil war is the worst humanitarian crisis of our time, and families are struggling to either survive within Syria or to make a new home in neighbouring countries. Families are being torn apart as they struggle to find acceptance in new lands and travel further afield for opportunities and seeking better lives for their families. In Turkey, you do not have to go far to hear the melodic tones of Syrian Arabic and to see the very real outcomes of this global crisis.

Join us as we travel to the Capa district of Istanbul and visit Small Projects of Istanbul, a local NGO helping displaced families, particularly women and children, to find their feet. With a global community of volunteers and supporters, SPI is working to provide supplemental education for children through weekly Turkish language classes and a homework support club, as well as art and other activities that develop community and a new sense of belonging.

Sit down for a simple meal of Syrian cuisine – maybe moujadara (burgal, green lentils and fried onion), maklube (spiced rice, chicken, and nuts), or fetteh (rice, crispy bread, chicken, and tahini) – proudly prepared by the ladies of the centre. Talk informally with some of the brave individuals who have had to flee their home, and with the eclectic group of volunteers from Turkey, Syria, Australia, New Zealand, USA, and beyond, who give up their time to help.

Afterwards, we’ll journey back to Sultanhamet by local tram. Your tour will finish back at the original meeting point. All net proceeds of this tour will go to Small Projects Istanbul.

Home cooked Istanbul

Join a local Turkish family for a meal in the heart of Istanbul. What better way can there be for getting an insight into the intricacies of social customs than by joining the locals in the most common – yet special – of situations: eating. This cultural tour also teaches you the secrets of backgammon, invites you to a national beverage in a teahouse, to enjoy a water pipe and more.

Begin by enjoying the warmth and comfort of a home cooked meal with a local family at the famous Sultanahmet Square. Turkish hospitality is renowned throughout the world and here you get the chance of experiencing it first-hand. As you tuck in, you will have a bilingual translator with you so that you can communicate with the hosts. Natter with the family and find out more about what it is like to live in Turkey.

After that pleasurable experience, head back to the road to explore the fascinating backstreets. In them you come across many picturesque wooden houses. Make your way towards a popular local hangout where you can enjoy some breath-taking views of the Marmara Sea. Make yourself at home; find a spot to watch the football game or strike up a conversation with the locals. You can even learn to play backgammon, Turkey’s favourite pastime – that is, after drinking tea and smoking water pipes, both of which you will also get the chance to taste. This tour will give you a much better insight into the everyday life of Turkish folks than any book or museum.

Indulge in some retail therapy and wander the ancient and oriental riches of the Grand and Spice Bazaars before checking out the Western delights of Istinye Park and Kanyon shopping centres.

From here we’ll continue with a stroll down one of the city’s most important commercial arteries, Istiklal Avenue This pedestrianized thoroughfare is located in the historic Pera district and is the place where Istanbulites come for their evening stroll. You’ll find exquisite boutiques, music and book stores, art galleries, cinemas, theatres, libraries, cafés, pubs, night clubs with live music, historical patisseries, chocolatiers and restaurants.

Our final visit is to the exquisitely preserved Mevlevi Sufi Lodge dating back to 1491. The original monastery was built on a ridge overlooking Galata by Divane Mehmed Dede, Sheikh of Afyon during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II.

Asian Istanbul - Private tour

Istanbul straddles two continents and in this 5 hour tour you’ll cross to the Asian shore and discover the sumptuous Beylerbeyi Palace, summer residence of the Ottoman sultans before climbing to the summit of Camlica Hill for some unforgettable views over the Bosphorus and Istanbul. A knowledgeable guide will provide you with plenty of local insight into the fascinating history of the different attractions.

After being picked up from your hotel we’ll head straight for the Asian shore of the straits, crossing the impressive Bosphorus suspension bridge. Here we'll explore Beylerbeyi Palace, situated right on the shoreline. This opulent palace was built in the 19th century as a summer residence for the Ottoman sultans and as place to entertain visiting heads of state. The Palace was designed in the Second Empire style and is somewhat more restrained in comparison to earlier Ottoman palaces. You will tour the reception rooms, harem and the men's and women's bathing areas.

If you feel like some fresh air then nearby Camlica Hill is ideal. This is one of the highest points in the city making for an ideal vantage point over Istanbul and the Bosphorus. Popular with Sunday strollers, lovers and children, Camlica Hill is a dearly loved refuge from the stresses of everyday life. Stroll around the beautifully landscaped gardens or sip on a Turkish coffee in a traditional Ottoman-style pavilion as you admire the views and watch the world go by. Then we'll cross back into Europe, taking you back to your point of departure.
