Istanbul Full Day Tour by Land and Sea - Private

Join us for a full-day Bosphorus tour by land and sea that will take you all the way back to Byzantium and Constantinople. At the crossroads between East and West, this channel is the setting for some of the most impressive landmarks in Istanbul as well as its fair share of hidden gems. We begin with a coach tour along the Golden Horn, the inlet that has been the city’s natural harbour since it was settled in Roman times. We’ll pass through the former non-Muslim districts, seeing traces of the their rich past such as the Bulgarian Orthodox metal Church of St. Stephen, the Jewish Hospital and 22km-long Byzantine defensive walls.

At the Egyptian Bazaar you will experience every culinary fragrance imaginable as you navigate through the stalls selling fresh and dried fruits, vegetables, flowers and spices.

Then we’ll hop on a boat for a romantic Bosphorus cruise, with Europe and Asia on either side. Take photos of marble palaces and ancient wooden villas perched side by side with modern mansions and luxury apartments. You’ll see the impressive Rumeli Fortress, which dates from before the Ottoman conquest and, if time permits, we’ll visit a leather showroom.

We’ll break for a traditional Turkish lunch to replenish our energies for the busy afternoon ahead.

And what an afternoon it is! We’ll head for the Beylerbeyi Palace, a summer residence for the sultans, and then to the Bosphorus Bridge. Here you can step from one continent (Europe) to another (Asia) in two minutes.

From there we’ll continue in Asia up to either Çamlıca Hill or Yeditepe for panoramic views of the city and bosphorus. You will also see the imperial gardens of the Yıldız Palace.

Istanbul Highlights - Private Tour

This full day tour will take you to some of the gems of Istanbul. Travel back in time and discover the story of Roman Byzantium, Byzantine Constantinople and Ottoman Istanbul as you explore the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace. A knowledgeable local guide will provide you with plenty of fascinating insight into the history and culture of this ancient city.

The first stop is the Hippodrome. This circus dating from Roman times was originally used for chariot racing and other public events and eventually became the social and cultural heart of Constantinople, the scene of riots, palace intrigues, love affairs and horse races throughout Byzantine history.

Next we'll visit the Sultanahmet Imperial Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque due to its decoration with more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. This splendid building with its six minarets has dominated the Istanbul skyline ever since its construction by Sultan Ahmet I in the early 17th century. Next head to Hagia Sophia, considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. Having been used as both a cathedral and a mosque, the vast and intricate building is now a fascinating museum.

From here we’ll head to the Grand Bazaar, a labyrinth of streets and narrow passageways where you will find over 4000 shops and stalls with separate areas for different crafts. This is an ideal place to stock up on traditional Turkish handicrafts such as colourful hand-painted earthenware and hand-burnished copper, brass and onyx.

The tour will end with a visit to the impressive Topkapi Palace, residence of the Ottoman sultans between the 15th and 19th centuries. This sumptuous building houses an exquisite collection of precious gems, jewellery, royal thrones and vestments as well as wonderful Ottoman-style miniatures. At its peak, the palace was a mysterious city within a city, home to as many as 4,000 people, covering a large area with an extensive shoreline along the Bosphorus.

Pamukkale (Hierapolis)

For thousands of years humans have been making their way to Pamukkale and Hierapolis to take it in the rare and fascinating landscape, and to relax in the thermal springs. Join us for this full-day tour out of Istanbul to south-west Turkey and discover just why the ancients flocked here.

You can choose either an early morning flight to Izmir or a coach journey to Kusadasi the night before. Please note that this is a long journey, with Pamukkale and Hierapolis located more than 600km from Istanbul.

Pamukkale and Hierapolis combined are a Unesco World Heritage Site. Pamukkale, which in English means ‘cotton castle’, is a series of cascading calcium terraces formed as a result of thermal springs. There are just a handful of these in the planet and they have to be seen to be believed. The contrast with the surrounding landscape is particularly stark. Up the hill, at Hierapolis, there is a well-preserved Roman theatre and ancient thermal baths, which have been restored and converted into an archaeological museum. Other significant sites include the Temple of Apollo, the Necropolis and the Nymphaeum.

Afterwards, you will return to Izmir for evening flight or to Kusadasi for the night bus to Istanbul.

Includes round trip plane or bus tickets, transfers to and from central hotels, English-speaking professional guide (other languages are available on request), lunch, museum entrance. In this afternoon tour you can discover Istanbul from the sea as well as from above as you take an invigorating cruise on the Bosphorous and then climb high above the city in a cable car. Explore an exotic spice market and discover the heart of Istanbul as you watch its most famous sights glide by from the deck of a river cruiser.

After being picked up from your hotel between 13.00 and 13,30, we'll head straight for the waterfront and board a river cruiser for a cruise along the Bosphorous between two continents. We'll pass the sumptuous Dolmabahçe and Beylerbeyi Palaces, the impressive Rumeli Fortress, built by Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror during the siege of Constantinople in 1453 and Leander's Tower, one of the symbols of Istanbul.

Then we'll climb to the top of Pierre Loti Hill by cable car where you can enjoy amazing panoramic views over the Bosphorous, the Golden Horn and the city. Next we'll reboard the bus and head for the Golden Horn. This natural and extremely secure harbour has played an important role in the development of Istanbul.
