The last person to be executed here was in 1941, and throughout its long history, dozens have been shot, beheaded and even burned at the stake. Delve into the grisly history of this medieval castle and a former royal palace, and discover the stories behind some of its most famous former inmates.

Private viewing of Stonehenge with tour to Lacock and Bath

Lacock, which dates back to Saxon times, has to be one of Britain’s prettiest and most immaculately preserved villages. With its limewashed, half-timbered and stone-built houses it has provided a picturesque backdrop to a host of film and TV productions, including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Emma and the Harry Potter movies.

Lacock Abbey, located at the heart of the village within its own woodland grounds, is a quirky country house built on the foundations of a nunnery, which still keeps its exquisite medieval cloisters intact. Our next port of call is Bath, a beautiful Georgian city that has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site for its breathtaking Regency architecture and elegant crescents. Here you can visit the extraordinary Roman Baths that gave the city its name and see the hot springs that attracted the Romans and still flow to this day.

Stonehenge is another immensely impressive monument, also a Unesco World Heritage Site, and you will have the chance to beat the crowds with a private viewing that enables you to see these mysterious prehistoric stones up close and in person.

This superb tour is an ideal way to see some of England’s most stunning historic monuments and sites all in the space of one memorable day.

Total London Experience

Begin with a panoramic tour of the city’s most famous monuments, taking in the Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Changing of the Guard, the Tower of London, a Thames cruise and the London Eye. You also have a choice of a walking tour.

The Gothic grandeur of Westminster Abbey is the final resting place of many monarchs and famous figures such as Geoffrey Chaucer and Isaac Newton as well as the Unknown Soldier. Continue to St Paul’s Cathedral, which was built in the rare and short-lived English baroque style. Marvel at the meticulous mosaics that decorate the choir or test the acoustics of the Whispering Gallery.

The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is one of those quintessentially British events, an awe-inspiring ceremony endowed with pageantry, pomp and circumstance. Head to the Tower of London, where the legendary Beefeaters regale visitors with tales about the former ‘guests’, the resident ravens and the headless ghost that is said to haunt the fortress.

After an optional lunch near the Tower, it's all aboard for a cruise down the River Thames. Cap off a fantastic day with a visit to the Coca-Cola London Eye, where you can enjoy breathtaking views over the city from high up over the Thames Embankment.

Roman Chester in One Day - Rail Tour

Chester was founded as a “castrum” or Roman fort in the year 79 AD by the Roman Legio II Adiutrix during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian. Chester's four main roads, Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge, follow routes laid out at this time – almost 2,000 years ago. No city in Britain is richer in terms of archaeological and architectural treasures than Chester with its Walled City on the River Dee.

The City Sightseeing Chester Open Top Bus Tour will introduce you to the City Walls, the Cathedral, Roman Amphitheatre and all the things to do in the city. Discover how Chester has survived and prospered through the ebb and flow of history as you are transported around the city. Join the tour at the Rail station (every 20/30 minutes) and enjoy a one hour guided tour of the City.

Then free time in Chester and here is some background to this fascinating city. Each chapter of Chester’s history is etched into the very fabric of the city – walk where Roman Legionaries marched to war, Viking raiders wreaked havoc, a civil war siege took place and Norman invaders conquered Anglo-Saxons.

The city features a host of classic heritage including the world-famous, two-tier Rows shopping galleries as well as the most complete City Walls, largest Roman Amphitheatre and oldest racecourse in Britain.

The city is also home to a 1000 year old Cathedral featuring Europe’s finest example of medieval carvings and a brand new Cathedral at Height attraction giving access to one of its sky-high towers via hidden passageways and ancient chambers.

Full Day Tour of the Cotswolds with Lunch

Our full day tour begins in Burford, a beautiful medieval town regarded by many as 'the gateway to the Cotswolds'. You'll have time to stroll down the magnificent high street, with buildings featuring every variety of Cotswold stone. There will be time to visit the tea houses and shops before we head south to Bibury, described as the ‘prettiest village in the Cotswolds’, by William Morris. Admire the cottages built in the late 1300s, which are also featured on the inside of all United Kingdom passports. You may also recognize this location from the popular movie “Bridget Jones Diary.”

The 17th century former coaching Inn serves a fabulous range of traditional cooking, ales and fine wines. Relax and rewind, in comfy armchairs in quirky styled warm rooms. Perhaps if you’re lucky you will indeed see a mother swan with her signets, as they drift past on the river.

In the afternoon we take a leisurely drive passing through charming villages before visiting Bourton-on-the-water and Stow-on-the Wold, two of the most picturesque parts of the northern Cotswolds. Your guide will take you on a short walk in each village explaining their history, and there's time to pop in to some of the many boutiques and tearooms, before re-joining the coach and returning to London.

Day trip to York

Board a train and travel back in time from modern London to ancient York, the northern capital of Roman Britannia.

Highlights
- Roam through the historic streets of York
- Visit the majestic York Minster and Jorvik Viking Centre

This walled city on the River Ouse is packed with historic attractions. Enjoy an open-top bus tour and admire the medieval street, The Shambles, the castle ruins, the glorious Gothic cathedral and much, much more.

History has been kind to the town the Romans called Eboracum, which until the Reformation was the most important city in northern England. But as neighbouring cities became wealthier and grew, York entered a period of decline, which actually saved much of its core from destruction and redevelopment. The result is the charming and beautiful city of today.

Visit the city walls, some sections of which date from Roman times, and the Micklegate. Amble along The Shambles, a street that seems like the set of a Shakespeare play or explore the castle area, which also has a museum located in a former prison. Be dazzled by the jewel in York’s crown, the Minster. This magnificent masterpiece of Gothic architecture is renowned for its elaborate exterior, imposing nave and stunning stained glass windows such as one popularly known as the Heart of Yorkshire.

Continue the journey back in time at the Jorvik Viking Centre, where the Old Norse city has been accurately reconstructed – even down to the smells from the time! Located on the actual site of an archaeological dig from the era, there are over 800 artefacts on display.
